Bible Reading Highlights
By Andrew Liew, Discipleship class 2018
Date: 14 January 2019 . All I read today: Genesis 31-43 .
Best thing I marked today: Genesis 31 .
Thought: Put our trust in God and live honestly and faithfully. When we obey God's calling, we can be assured that He will always be with us through good times and bad. This chapter 31 begins with conflict but ends with a treaty.
How it impressed me: Jacob was an honest shepherd when he served La-ban faithfully for many years. Jacob was committed to his work in the field until God called Jacob to leave and intervened to protect him from Laban. Jacob obeyed God's call, so he left for his home land, trusting in God's promise.
What do I understand as 'trusting in God'? I recognise Jacob's honesty, commitment, patience and responsibilities in work and dealing with oth-ers, and his faithfulness to his wives. But his trust in God is an example for me.
I thought I was a committed Christian, but the existence of God in my life was limited only to the church services, bible studies and prayer every weekend. I did not trust God fully. I did not let go of my worries and the burdens. Most of the decisions made were based on my own wisdom and understanding. It was my own self-centeredness that drove me to do things that did not please God. In short, I did not take God seriously. Many times, my decisions ended with failure or disappointment.
Since the start of the Discipleship series, it helped me practice and grow in my relationship with God. Everyday I have learned to trust in God's call-ing and believed God would guide me in His safe path. I have learnt and discerned the direction God wants me to follow.
